Hashtags are the most over-thought and least impactful part of most Instagram strategies. The accounts obsessing over the perfect 30-tag set are usually the accounts with a bio that does not explain what they do.
Here is what changed, and what is left.
Hashtags are a classification signal now
Following a hashtag was removed from Instagram years ago, and hashtag feeds are no longer a meaningful source of reach for most accounts. What hashtags still do is help Instagram decide what a post is about, so it can be shown to the right test audience.
That is a real function. It is just not the function people think they are optimising for.
What follows from that
Fewer, more precise tags beat thirty generic ones. Three to eight tags that accurately describe the post outperform a wall of tags in three unrelated categories, because a confused topic signal leads to a test pool of the wrong people — and a test pool of the wrong people responds poorly, which stops distribution.
Tag the subject, not the aspiration. #homecoffee classifies the post. #followforfollow classifies you as an account that solicits follows, which is not a category you want to be in.
Banned and spammy tags hurt. Some tags are restricted because they were used for coordinated inauthentic behaviour. Using one can suppress your post. If a tag you use shows no recent posts when you search it, stop using it.
Location tags still work. A location tag gives a local classification and can put a post in front of nearby audiences. For any business with a physical presence, it is worth more than five generic hashtags.
Branded tags build a library, not reach. #yourbrandname does nothing for distribution and is still worth using, because it collects user content into one place.
How many, and where
Three to eight tags. Put them in the caption on a new line rather than in the first comment if the caption is short — the placement makes almost no difference to distribution, and tags in the caption are readable by the topic classifier alongside the words around them.
Do not bury them in a block of thirty. If you are hiding your hashtags because you are ashamed of them, that is a signal the tags are not relevant.
The thing that replaced hashtags
Search. Instagram now indexes captions, on-screen text and profile names. A post whose caption contains the phrase someone types into search can be found for months without any distribution help at all.
That means the higher-leverage habit is writing captions that contain the plain-language description of the content — in a sentence a human would actually say — rather than hunting for a tag with the right follower count. We cover the mechanics in Instagram SEO.
