Almost every other tactic on Instagram produces a spike that decays within 48 hours. Search produces a trickle that keeps going, because a post that answers a query keeps answering it.

Instagram indexes four fields you control:

  1. Your name field (not your username).
  2. Your bio.
  3. Captions.
  4. On-screen text in Reels and image text in posts.

Everything else — usernames, alt text, hashtags — plays a smaller role. Instagram's head has confirmed that captions and on-screen text are indexable; the rest is inference.

Optimise the name field first

This is the single highest-value field on the platform. It is what the search result shows, and it is weighted heavily.

  • Weak: Maya ✨ or mayacreates
  • Strong: Maya | Home Coffee for Beginners

Keep your brand name if you have one. Add the plain-language category after a separator. If you change your name field, the change is usually reflected in search within a couple of days.

Write captions that contain the query

The instinct is to write captions that sound good. The optimisation is to write captions that contain the words a person would type.

  • Before: Obsessed with how this turned out 😍
  • After: A five-minute iced coffee recipe that works with instant coffee. Full method below.

The second one answers easy iced coffee recipe. It also reads better, which is the nice part about this kind of optimisation — writing for search and writing for humans are the same job, mostly.

Put the searchable phrase in the first sentence, because the first sentence gets the most weight and because it is the only part that shows before "more".

Put the phrase on screen

Reels are indexed on their on-screen text. Two habits:

  • Show the topic in a text block in the first two seconds: How to fix a flat white without a machine.
  • Say the phrase out loud as well; spoken words are used for captions and therefore indexed indirectly.

Think in queries, not keywords

The difference between Instagram search and Google search is intent. On Instagram, people search for content they want to watch, not for a web page:

  • easy breakfast ideas — watchable
  • how to edit reels — watchable
  • best CRM software — a Google query, not an Instagram one

So build posts around the questions your audience would want a video for, not the questions they would want a document for. Then answer the same question in a caption a paragraph long, and you catch both readers and viewers.

Search versus Explore

Explore is recommendation: Instagram guesses what you might like. Search is intent: the person typed something.

This matters for planning. Explore rewards trend participation and entertainment. Search rewards clear answers to specific questions. An account that only chases trends is invisible in search; an account that only makes explainers grows slowly but steadily for years.

The healthy mix is roughly 70% of your posts aimed at your existing audience and Explore, and 30% built to answer a specific searchable question.

The compounding part

Nothing here produces a spike. What it produces is a library of posts that keep appearing in search results for months. Combined with pinned posts and a profile that converts, search traffic is the most durable growth channel available on Instagram — and the least used, because it does not feel like growth while it is happening.
