Likes are cheap. A viewer can give one without thinking, and the ranking system treats them accordingly. Saves and sends cost the viewer something: a save says "I will need this again", and a send says "this person specifically should see it".
That is why a post with 200 likes and 40 sends can outreach a post with 2,000 likes and 4 sends. If you only have time to optimise for two things, optimise for these.
What earns a save
Saves are a private act of filing. The viewer expects to need the post later, and does not want to search for it.
Content that earns saves:
- Checklists and templates. Steps, in order, that someone will follow.
- Numbered references. "Seven hook formats", "the four signals", "nine caption openings".
- Anything with a specific figure in it. Numbers are what people come back for.
- Before/after with the method. The result earns the stop, the method earns the save.
- Carousels. A carousel is a document. Documents get filed.
How to ask: "Save this for your next profile audit" works because it names a moment. "Save for later" does not, because there is no later.
What earns a send
Sends are social. Someone taps share and then chooses a specific person, which means the content made them think of that person.
Content that earns sends:
- Recognition. "This is exactly what your group chat does."
- Extreme specificity. "For anyone who has ever tried to shoot content with a toddler in the room."
- Useful disagreement. Something a person wants a friend to see because it settles an argument.
- Short and complete. A Reel or a single image that can be understood in two seconds is far easier to send than a carousel that needs reading.
How to ask: do not. "Tag a friend" is the weakest possible version of this. If the content does not make someone think of a specific person, no caption will.
Saves and sends are different audiences
A save usually comes from someone who already follows you. A send usually reaches someone who does not. That is why the two together are worth more than the sum of their parts: saves convince Instagram your content is valuable, and sends bring it new viewers without any distribution help.
A post that earns saves but no sends will grow slowly and steadily. A post that earns sends but no saves will spike and stop. You want both, and the content structures that earn them are not exclusive — put the reference material in the carousel and the punchline in the Reel.
Reading it in your own insights
Instagram shows saves and shares per post. The ratio to watch is per reach, not per follower:
Saves ÷ reach — above 2% is strong, above 5% is a break-out. Sends ÷ reach — above 1% is strong, above 3% is a break-out.
Check both two hours after publishing and again the next morning. A post whose sends keep climbing overnight is one Instagram is still testing widely, and that is the post to make a follow-up to.
